[004] Inarizushi Nametan

Nametan dreamed of becoming a divine messenger of O-Inari. However, he ate too much Inari-zushi, received a reprimand from the gods, and was transformed into the shape of Inari-zushi. His plump form is cherished as a lucky charm that brings prosperity. For the Goryo-wake (spirit distribution), sponges and brushes are used to hand-paint each item, and it wears a hand-dyed age (fried tofu pouch). This is a special Nametan born in commemoration of the Niiname-sai festival.

As autumn deepened and prayers for Niiname-sai filled the air,
Nametan visited the Inari shrine. He yearned to become a fox, a divine messenger of bountiful harvests, wishing for its virtue and power to reside within him. Just as he believed his wish had been granted, the gods declared, "Your purification is still insufficient," and admonished him. Nametan, who had believed he would transform into a fox, was instead transformed into Inari-zushi, with sesame seeds for eyes on vinegared rice, enveloped in a fried tofu pouch.
